Marriage is nearly universal in India, says the latest edition of the National Family Health Survey. But people are marrying later; the median age for marriage for women is 19, it’s almost 25 for men. Compare this with the previous survey for 2015-16, which found that the median age for first marriage for women was 18.6 years and for men 24.5 years. Interestingly, the median age at which people had their first sexual intercourse mirrors the age of marriage — 19 for women and 25 for men. And that’s something that was seen in previous editions of the survey as well. Sure, this is not universal and we all probably know people who have had multiple sexual experiences before marriage. But those are the exceptions, as the survey shows.
